In 2004, investor Barry Silbert created an unconventional kind of online marketplace that dealt in restricted securities for public companies. After several years of expansion into other asset clauses, this marketplace has grown into the massive online illiquid asset trading platform SecondMarket, the world’s biggest broker of venture-backed private-company stock by value of shares traded.
